Nike Design

MVP

Introduction

Nike, the global leader in footwear, boasts an extensive network of creative teams spanning the globe. Given the scale of the organization, it's apparent that a multitude of design standards coexist within its dynamic environment. The challenge lies in streamlining operations across diverse groups within the company. Recognizing this need for efficiency, Nike chose to adopt Figma as its primary digital design tool. It became evident that consolidating resources to establish a unified source of truth would be a logical step forward.

Challenge

To consolidate and standardize the user interface (UI) across email, app, and web platforms for Nike and agency partners, and establish a comprehensive design system in Figma accessible to all designers and developers. Responsible for change management, including educating and guiding new Figma users in utilizing the design library.

Role

Lead Product Designer

Make it responsive

Building in Figma offers a multitude of benefits, with Auto Layout standing out as one of the most acclaimed tools. By integrating Auto Layout into our components and templates, we achieve a responsive building format. If a module was overlooked during the build, there's no need to manually adjust each pixel—simply plug it in and let Auto Layout handle the rest!

Change management and training

When we launched each chapter of the design system (Email, App, and Web), we conducted geo-specific meetings to onboard users. These sessions included training on:

Basic skills in Figma

Unified UI across all platforms

Where to find relevant information
How to manipulate instances
Previewing dark mode (email only)
Exporting slices
Plugins to support workflow

Communication is key

Since our target audience was on a global scale, it was imperative we build in guidance to each component. So we made sure documentation lived within the library, embedded in the component and paired with a training program.

The Final Product

The MVP was a success. Since Spring 2021, the Nike Design System MVP has been improving creative build times by up to 50% globally. We have been able to keep consistency for development teams and maintain the library efficiently.

Nike has since adopted the design system internally.
